Prospective Members
Requirements for Membership. A Prospective Member must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid NJ driver's license.
- Hold CPR certification.
- Have successfully completed a course in Advanced First Aid.
- If asked, provide physician's note stating that the prospective member is physically able to perform first aid
duties.
- Be in accord with the objectives of the BHVRS. (See About BHVRS for a list of the BHVRS objectives.)
Membership Categories. There are three Member categories:
- Associate Member - A new member who has been associated with the BHVRS for less than two years,
has completed a course in advanced first aid, has a CPR Pro certificate, has not yet obtained certification
as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) as defined by the NJ First Aid Council, and who works under
the supervision of a Regular Member.
- Regular Member - A member who has completed all educational and experience requirements,
including EMT certification, who has been nominated and accepted for full membership by the
supervising LIne Officers of the BHVRS, and who works independently to provide first aid.
- Industrial Member - A member who meets all educational and experience requirements as a Regular
Member, including EMT certification, and who responds to Squad calls from his or her place of Business
in Berkeley Heights. Generally, Industrial Members do not live locally and would be unable to respond
from home.


Uniforms and Equipment: Immediately upon joining, Associate Members are supplied with uniforms and
equipment. These items are paid for by the BHVRS.
Training: Associate Members join with a team of Regular Members to respond to emergency calls and to learn
about all aspects of the BHVRS organization.
Regular Members commit to a weekly twelve-hour duty shift. During this time period, a Member may respond to an
emergency squad call from any location in Berkeley Heights. Members are not required to remain in the building
during their shifts.
Effective April 1, 2007, all new Associate members on active status shall be permitted to serve on “Flex-Time”
shifts, with a designated crew. The Flex-Time” hours shall start with a minimum 4-hour shift and may be
increased to six, eight, ten or twelve hour shifts, with the discretion of the Associate Member.
Continuing Education: Continuting education and training is provided to all Squad members free of charge.
Training sessions are generally held once a month at the Squad building.
The Organization: All Squad Members work together to manage the BHVRS organization. Members may serve as
Administrative Officers, Operational Line Officers, and Committee Chairpeople. Committees are responsible for
all functional areas of BHVRS, including supplies, social events, and equipment. An administrative meeting is
held once a month at the Squad building.
